Ian Shankland in the UK sent me the photos below (used here with persmission of the copyright holder) in an attempt to identify the jeep and the unit these boys were in:

"We think they were US, probably Army but possibly USAAF and we think the photo was taken in Sicily. If we could identify their unit we'd be very pleased but its not easy when the only item of uniform is a hat. Clearly they look like they were maintaining something mechanical, but what?

"What seems unusual to me is that the vehicle they're sitting on looks like a jeep but has doors. Also the bodywork below the door opening seems to be corrugated unlike all jeep photos I've seen. Camouflage paint seems to have been applied and that, if the door was oversprayed may be partially creating the corrugated appearance."

I responded that the soldiers, to my mind, appear to be British/Commonwealth rather than US, juding by the service caps, coveralls, boots and hair style. The "corrugated" ridges were likely the indentations for the tools and that the color variation was probably dust; though if UK this jeep may have gotton some Mickey Mouse camo design? And I've never seen a door like that.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Tim
