Lee,
The Firefly was produced on two types of Sherman hull.
The initial production was made from M4A4 tanks which had longer hulls to accomodate their Chrysler multi-bank engine. These were the Sherman Vc Fireflies.
The second type used remanufactured M4s, including upgraded DV hulls, or the newer M4 hybrid hulls with normal length hulls. These are the Sherman 1c Fireflies.
Conversion evidently started on some M4A3s to be used by the Americans, but the war ended before they could be used.
The M4A2 and the M4A1 were not used because either technical or internal layout differences precluded their conversion.
