Going along w/Mike's excellent info, some of the original DML M4A4/Firefly VC hulls had some mistakes. Here's a correction article if you're so inclined:
http://mmcalc.tripod.com/Shermans/Model_FAQ/Modeling_the_M4A4-Firefly.html
"Were Firefly hulls extended" Not technically. The Firefly VC was the upgunning of M4A4 Shermans, which ALREADY had a lengthened hull. This is due to the layout of the Chrysler engine. All M4A4s had the lengthened hull. The fact is that some were converted by British workshops to Firefly configuration. That's all. There were other Firefly upgrades made to M4 (and Mike's blurb about US M4A3s). These chasses had "normal" length hulls.
Feel free to ask anything else.
