I know that there was a shortage of the 20mm hanging turret, in fact half the Sd.Kfz.140/1 were delivered without them. So it's plausible that the Sd.Kfz.234/1 was also "turretless". So at some point someone had the idea to install the 20mm pedestal turret.
In the Tech Intel vol.2 there is a sketch of the base the pedestal was fitted to. It is described as an Sd.Kfz.234/1. Included are two photos. One a close-up of the mount and one a rear view that shows the extended armour plates that where added.
