I used Humbrol's zinc chromate primer for them. On vehicles with normal control cabs (e.g. Bedford OY), there is a patch paintd on the bonnet (hood). With forward control cabs (like the Matador, WOT-8 etc.), a horizontal rectangular plate is attached below the windscreen and the paint is appplied to that.
