Gerry,

I was fortunate to aquaint myself with George Rabuse before he passed away. He was restoring a M4A4 Sherman. While he was searching for parts for his Sherman he came across a long shoresman that worked during WW II at the dock getting US armor ready for shippment. THe long shoresman explained that while at the docks US tanks had the little 'comb' device welded on and repainted at the docks. Besides weatherproofing and getting the vehicles ready for shippment the vehicles also had to stored on the ships. To keep the tanks from shifting and rolling during shippment the tank were locked in gear. On the Sherman they would place the steering arms forward (in gear) then tie rope around the arms to lock them in place. This rope was then snaked out through the hull machine gun opening and tied to the 'comb' during shippment. Apparently the new Sherman book will include this along with some photos of the application. I e-mail MMiR about this about 8 eights ago without any of the staff believing the story I just told here. Until they found photo reference I was just another no nothing Sherman geek. It sort of made me a bit upset. Oh well.
