#1 Since there would have to be someone inside anyway, why not tie off in there?
#2 If outside,why not tie off to a light-guard or lift-hook?
#3 Why not just set the brakes;you know, the things that stop it.
#4 With the levers on the left side of the tank and the 'comb' on the right,it would take a miracle to tie them forward, anyway.
#5 This is the biggest hole. The levers are already in the forward position.I believe you have to pull back on them;half way stopped the track from pulling, all the way put the brake on to turn sharp.

Looks more like something to step on to keep from slipping when mounting. It was not designed to pull a string or small rope through. It would get stuck on the sharp metal and break the string. An eye-hook would have served that purpose better.
I understand that you got stories from people who might have been around then, but they don't jive.........Dan
