All of your questions were brought up in the original discussion and answered.
"#1 Since there would have to be someone inside anyway, why not tie off in there?"
Ans. The hatches would be sealed for shipment to keep out salt air as it can be very corsive in a short period of time. The machine gun hole could be easily pluged once the cable was set.
"#2 If outside,why not tie off to a light-guard or lift-hook?"
Ans. A steel cable was used not a rope, not easy to tie off and the multiple slots in the "comb" allowed for some tension adjustment.
"#3 Why not just set the brakes;you know, the things that stop it."
Ans. The hatch seal would have to be broken to release the brakes. The tanks sometimes had to be towed or pushed into position on or below deck so a way of releasing and setting movement from outside was needed.
"#4 With the levers on the left side of the tank and the 'comb' on the right,it would take a miracle to tie them forward, anyway."
Ans. Evidence was found in at least one tank that a pully was mounted inside the tank in the rear of the interior, when the cable was installed it fed through the MG opening to the rear of the interior through the pully and back forward to the steering latterls.
"#5 This is the biggest hole. The levers are already in the forward position.I believe you have to pull back on them;half way stopped the track from pulling, all the way put the brake on to turn sharp."
Ans. Pulling the cable forward through the MG opening would pull the latterls backward into the engaged position since the cable ran around the pully. i.e. Tank locked in gear until cable was released.
