Subject:  Re: Life expectancy of an AFV in combatList thread.

I'm glad this thread come up; not that I have any info to add,
other than echoing and confirming the excellence of Belton
Cooper's book "Death Traps," but it seems to me that a lot
of models go way overboard with the "paint chipping." It
makes the AFV's look (in my opinion) forty to fifty years
old; i.e., like original tanks parked on a display pad. Why
should a relatively new tank have such a deteriorated paint
job? Faded paint, sure, but a single coat of paint over a
coat of primer should last a LOT longer. You usually only
get a lot of flaking with multiple coats, like a five-year-
old vehicle in peacetime (we painted our 113's every year, and
the washrack would peel that stuff right off, in places).

This is just my opinion, understand, and I know there are always
exceptions; crappy paint, rushed paint job, etc., but folks need
to dial WAY back on the chipped paint.
