Sovjet union afv (at least BMP) has a divice to attach the log on to the tracks. After attaching the log on to both tracks you start the engine and try to move the afv those meter before the log reaches the sprocket or idler wheel.
This is a very dirty way to get out of the mud but it work much better than just to "but" the log under the track. Since i have done this myself a can tell you that its much better to try to connect a wire or two, or tree, before geting into the dirt.
I dont know if this sovjet union divice dates back to WWII but most likely i does.
