Yes, track was often salvaged--German manganese steel tank tracks had a very short life compared to the rubber-bushed, double link US tracks, and towards the end of the war, replacements were increasingly difficult to get. Some Tiger and Jadgtiger units had to go into action with narrow transportation tracks because the wider battle tracks were unavailable.
However, the missing track isn't always a due to salvage. In some cases, a wreck will be photographed with one or both tracks missing because it suffered a severed track in combat and was later towed out of the way as advancing units bypassed it. |
