Pat, the britsh were the first to use the Sherman in comabat and used bot hthe M4A2 (welded hull) and the M4A1 (cast hull). The initial variants of these were direct vision hulls and had the lighter M3 suspension. Later deliveries of the M4A2 had various combinations of M3 suspension, one piece noise etc.
The British designation of the M4A2 was the Sherman III. The cast hulled M4A1 was designated the Sherman II.
The other British designations were
M4 = Sherman I (Did not serve in North Africa (happy to be proved wrong though) Served in Italy and NWE
M4A3 = Sherman IV (under ten delivered - no known combat service)
M4A4 = Sherman V Med, Italy and NWE. (No known service in NA)
The Firefly was converted from ONLY M4 (Ic) and M4A4 (Vc) vehicles. The Ic could have either a welded or Composite hull.
The Dragon Sherman III represents a cast hood mid production M4A2; the DML Tarawa kit is also a Sherman III and a great number of Welded hood M4A2 mid production served in Commonwealth formations. I have great photo from the IWM of a Squadron lined up with DV, Welded and Cast Hood M4A2 9some with M3 suspension) all lined up together.
I hope this answers your Question.
