| I concur with all the comments above. Tank track does not last forever and is a precious commodity. As recently as the mid to late 1990s I was supporting Abrams tanks and our T-156 track was lasting about 600 miles before it was worn out. Back then, the new T-158 lasted between 800 to 2,000 miles depending on the environment and amount of (extremely difficult and laborious) maintenance the crew and unit puts in. Back then, the US Army Armor Chief (A Major General and former AR Div CDR from Desert Storm) told me and my staff we were "failures" until we could design and build track that would, "last forever, weigh nothing and cost nothing!" Yes, serviceable track would be a very precious commodity on the battlefield whether for replacement track or supplemental armor! |
