Bill:
I have been retired from the Army since 2004. I have never seen either the real thing or a photo of an Abrams tank with "supplemental armor" until very recently. The Army is now developing something called TUSK which is the Tank Urban Survival Kit which they use in Iraq right now. This is definitely a standard ARmy solution and not solider applied in the field.
