I still find it unlikely but, bearing in mind what you mentioned, not impossible. I don't know the story in Jentz's book. Unfortunately the book is incredibly expensive in Finland (and rare too).
Why I think it's not likely the Panthers faced older T-34s?
Firstly, when 11. SS-PzGrenDiv 'Nordland' was transferred to the Army Group Nord from Balkans in December 1943 its Panzer regiment (Hermann von Salza) came a little later and without tanks.
Secondly, it's true that later in 1944 the regiment was equipped with Panther Ds but I remember the amount being something like 45+ in poor shape, as mentioned. Some sources say they were ex-Leibstandarte but I found no confirmation to this. I'm sorry I couldn't find the exact date when the regiment was actually reported ready for action either.
In this regard I believe T-34s the division faced were mostly newer than mod. 41s. Impossible it's not, though.
