I would imagine that the gun got oxide primer. But if I can advise -- don't give in to the extreme paint chipping fad. The 3.7cm Pak 35/36 was in use in the German army for a long time before hostilities. Their crews would have maintained them to a high degree. Once in war, they were quickly seen to be less than ideal against enemy armor and brought out of line as the war progressed.

A more visually interesting and accurate scheme to attempt would be a heavily dusty Pak with areas of dark grey paint showing where the crew's hands and uniforms would have rubbed off the dust.
