Gaz,
Although I don't know how common the practice would have been, I do recall seeing at least one picture of GI in France with something written on the back of his Parson's Jacket (by the way, the Ike jacket was the short jacket with breast pocket similar to the British battledress that was worn mostly as a "going out" jacket).
I don't have my reference books at the location I'm writing this from, but I'm pretty sure I have the picture I'm referring to somewhere at home.
