Roderick,
My wife is Japanese and she really gets on my case when I mispronounce Japanese. てas in Tent is a short 'e' sound, at least in my English may be the part of the US I'm from) and according from my wife (she is from Nagoya) て is pronounced with a long English sounding 'a'sound. ち doesn't have the 'cha' sound but I couldn't figure out how to translate the 'ch' sound but Roman 'i' translation sounds like a long 'e' sound. All the vowel sounds are not short vowel sounds in English specifically い which is not the short sound like in Iguana but more like in 'see' and え is a long sounding 'A'. Now it may be different dialic ( I think I spelled that wrong) from where you are living in Japan and where my wife grew up. granted I am not fluent in Japanese but I do hear it everyday and as I said my wife is always on my case if I mispronounce something. It is still very difficult in normal speech for me to hear the difference between す and つ.
