I expect this thread will grow exponentially....
As I see it, and as Roy stated, it sort of depends on the vehicle and what you mean by "late war". Are we talking Battle of the Bulge? Or the last month in the Berlin area? Panther tanks or Kubelwagen?
I've seen compelling arguments made for dark yellow, dark green, and red primer (either with some patches exposed in place of rotbruan or all of the primer covered in a pattern but with no base coat of paint per se). I, personally, have not bought any arguments for dark "panzer" gray or field gray.
Let's see what others say.
