Tigers in Combat, Volumes 1 & 2, by Wolfgang Schneider, are bar none, the best references for operational Tiger photos. It is organized by unit, and each gets a day to day history, loss and receipt records, org charts, camouflage and markings section and as many photos as the publisher can fit in (nearly all are veterans' photos rather than the propaganda shots seen over and over). The original Fedorowicz hardback editions are the best, though the somewhat edited Stackpole paperback versions will do (and are much easier on the wallet).
The Thomas Jentz/Hilary Louis Doyle books published by Schiffer are superb for the technical development, and have a very decent selection of operational pictures as well as accurate drawings of all variants (except the Ferdinand/Elefant and the Jagdtiger) Much of the same material is also available in the "Panzer Tracts" books, though the big Schiffer volumes end up costing less in the long run.
For the tank destroyer variants, Schiffer has just published the English edition of Heavy Jagdpanzer by Walter Spielberger, Thomas Jentz and Hilary Louis Doyle. Superb photo coverage plus Doyle's scale drawings, though the translation is poor. Covers the Ferdinand/Elefant, Jagdpanther and Jagdtiger. Heavily discounted through Amazon, so it's a very good value.
For the budget-conscious, Osprey has books by Jentz and Doyle on the Tiger I and II, and Scheider did a "Squadron Style" paperback photo book for Schiffer on the King Tiger, again broken down by unit, and they also have one on the Elefant and Jagdtiger. |
