Tim,
If they weren't what we used to call in the British Army "Jackmen" (selfish people who only ever helped themselves), then they would probably muck in & help the TD crew by passing the rounds up to them. Also, smoking & handling ammunition tend generally not to mix - most armies have strict rules on this & whether it would be adhered to or not would depend on the overall disciplinary outlook of units involved, even in the field.
Having said all this, it's your call. Anything is possible, because no doubt it all happened that way in the big world.
