David,

My reference (Jim Winchester, Tanks and AFVs of WW2) also says 3d & 9th ADs for the M26. Had no photo that showed the rear deck well enough to see if a star was on there.
Would say that some units might have done as part of SOP and for aerial recognition. Although once all the gear, chow and kit was loaded not sure you could see it clearly anyway.
