Subject:  BARs and Paratrooper Usage During D-DayList thread.

A question that comes up regularly is whether or not paratroopers used BARs during and/or immediately after D-Day. Convention wisdom said no, because the BAR could not be conveniently broken down for safe jumping. But Mark Bando, a historian of the 101st Airborne, now thinks it may have been possible, and I heard something interesting in a documentary that suggests the 82nd Airborne had BARs as well.

In "Battlefield Diaries: D-Day--The First Men In," Bob Murphy, veteran of the 505th PIR of the 82nd, talks about the fighting at La Fiere bridge and the soldiers usings "machine guns and Browning automatic rifles" during the fighting on June 6 and/or 7.

So, to the extent that one can rely on a vet's memories some 60 years after the fact, there's another indication that BARs were used at this time--which might make some paratrooper figures from SOL and Verlinden a more useful in this setting.
