Tim,
From all I remember reading, I believed the .30s were dropped separately. In the series Band of Brothers, one trooper is shown cradling one in his arms.....I'll check my sources over the next day or so (I have have to get them out anyway for a Sicily Dio I'm planning), and I'll see if I can confirm whether or not this was ever done.
Oh, one other thing. There was a Pathfinder, I think from the 82nd, who jumped with a cut-down BAR. I think it's mentioned in one of the Bando books. Again, I'll find that source for you.
