Hello all,

It is quite possible the rear suspension of the AS 42 included the 'steering arms' -- except the rear steering arms located to a fixed anchoring point, rather than attaching to a tie rod.

Some modern vehicles using McPherson strut suspension are like this (the Datsun/Nissan 510 series and original 240/260/280 Z's come to mind).

While deletion of the rear driver's station doesn't automatically mean the absence of four-wheel steering, it might suggest it. The theoretical purpose of a rear driving position on an armored car was to allow a 'quick-getaway' in a vehicle with limited rear visibility. Four-wheel steering would offer the rear driver the same feel and same control, traveling backwards, as the front driver had going forward.

The driver of an AS 42 had pretty good all-around visibility, and possibly Ansaldo considered 4-wheel steering a needless complexity. On the other hand, keeping the suspension as nearly identical as possible would allow some economy of design and producion.

For what it's worth.

Regards,
Paul Gibson
