Before I answer this question, it s probably good to remeber that zimmeret
was originally applied by the field workshops and then later in the
factories. Secondly the application of zimemeret was a complex time
consuming task which required several steps and hardeng/drying time between
some steps.
"Do German field workshops re-patch zimmerit when the zimmerit comes off?"
Plenty of photos show unpatched zimmeret incl photos of Flakpanzer and
stellung which had been overhaulled in factories.
Some vehicles may well have been patched, and probably were ,but it would
seem to be a lot of effort for repair crew who were generally working long
hours and would have resulted in a vehicle being pulled out of combat, a
luxury the PAnzertruppe could rarely afford.
If the vehicles were patch fixed, I would expect matchingthe pattern would
be hard, given you would need a trowel with the same pattern as that used by
the factory/original applicator and you would have problems matching the
pattern where the old and new meet, particularly if you want to avoid having
to chisel off old zimmeret to get complete squares etc. And you would have
to take steps to avoid having the mix run onto existing zimmeret and thus
ruin their ridge pattern. And after all that you would have to repaint the
whole area. In short all this would see mto difficult under combat
conditions.
Cheers
