Hi.
I just flicked through a couple of references. David Fletcher's 'Tanks in Camera: Archive Photographs from the Tank Museum" shows lots of Crusader pics. All but one of them have Crusaders with what you call the 'long' skirts. One photo shows no skirts at all, and another shows one front section missing. This is on Crusader III and earlier variants. So I'd say go with long skirts (maybe missing a section) or none, and you're safe.
This includes Crusaders up to Tunisia.
