Jim & Andrew,
Another bit of Arnhem trivia for you; Major Robert Cain VC, 2nd South Staffords (Airborne), who is mentioned quite a lot in "A Bridge Too Far" won his medal at Arnhem for stalking & destroying German armour (often alone) with a PIAT A/T weapon which he fired from the hip - anyone who has ever fired one of these will tell you it was a fearsome weapon to use, just as dangerous to the firer as to the target, & firing it from the hip could easily result in a broken leg or hip.
The interesting fact? Major Cain was the father-in-law of British TV presenter & motoring journalist Jeremy Clarkson, who made a documentary about 2 years ago on the Victoria Cross & its winners, which he dedicated to his late father-in-law.
Cheers,
Chris.
