Try Googling for "Culin Hedgerow cutter." Sergeant Curtis G. Culin of the 2d Armored Division came up with the design we all know and love. Prior to Culin's design, some tanks were fitted with pipes that dug holes into the Hedgerow which engineers would pack with TNT to blow a gap.
