| Subject: | My try at identifying this vehicle type... | |

Hi Paul.
Interesting vehicle indeed. I am not one for British markings so I leave it to others. As for the tank.
This is from the lot which had thickened areas which obviated the need for appliqué armor. Look above the second volute suspension bracket (bogie) and you will see a shadow. This procedure (scraping sand away from the casting molds) added an extra inch over the ammunition areas which were located 55.25 inches back on the left side and the armor was 33.25 inches wide. The top was faired into the slope. The right side had two thick areas and the space in between was also thickened by one half inch. These were set back 43.5 inches from the front with the forward spot being 33.25 inches wide, then followed by a 42.5 inch wide area thickened one half inch and the rear area was 36.75 inches wide and one inch thick. All thickened areas are faired into the slop on the top edge. None reach the bottom to allow for mounting side skirts.
This hull type also dispensed with the bulge above the bow MG.
Turret has a thickened cheek. This usually follows the M34A1 gun rotor shield, earlier split commander's cupola D69993 (November 1942 pattern), and revised vane sight. The pistol port was re-introduced right before switching production from the D50878 low bustle to the D78461 high bustle turret. This can be seen on some M4 composite hull tanks. The loader's hatch could be retrofitted and the two inch smoke mortar hole (the second photo of this series seems to have it plugged). None of the photos presented show an armored cover over the sight which was also back-fitted to several turrets.
The transmission cover is the later E8543 referred to as the sharp model. The rear track guards are the ones welded onto either side of the engine deck in the photo.
Regards,
Saúl |
