Also don't forget that tanks are typically most heavily armored in the front, then the sides, then the rear, undersides, and roof. (For example, was it Tigers or Panthers that had 15mm roof armor, later increased to 40mm?)
I would think that high explosive mortar shells, coming down nearly vertical on an armored vehicle would probably have the potential to penetrate the relative thin topside armor of the tanks you mentioned.
