Hi Volker,
First of all it is not my intention to make you feel nailed down or pressed in any way.
I just believe that this star was a standard feature on all cylindrical turret t-28s and t-35s.
Let me explain what makes me think so.
1. I have became ebay-addicted and downloaded tones of photos of multi-turret soviet tanks but only on very few of them main turret roof is visible. This refers to photos published in books as well. So everything I write is my speculation based on some sources.
2. See the photo of this finnish tank:

The star has rounded soft edges and is barely visible. It is possible that on some wartime photographs the star was not visible at all (but yet present) due to lighting conditions, dust, dirt, snow or print quality at the end.
The good example of this is the militaria photo you mentioned. If you examine carefully this photo you should see the outline of the star on the roof. (I asked my wife to verify this and she told me that she saw the star too:-)). There is a photo of the same tank taken from different angle in Waldemar Trojca's photo-book on t-28 and t-35 (book cover and p. 27) and the star is visible very clearly.
3. Maksim Kolometz has written (Frontline Illustration 4/2000 p. 26 - book translated and issued by Wydawnictwo Militaria as well) that there were three reinforcing stampings at the front of t-28's turret roof. Two of them were longitudinal in shape and one - star-shaped. I think this refers to cylindrical turrets only as they had roofs stamped entirely as one part.
Conical turrets had flat roofs and I believe there were no stampings.
I do not think that it would make sense to produce two different types of punches (with or without star) for one vehicle.
4. In Militaria No. 159 p. 27 (Frontline Illustration 5/2000 p. 29) Ilya Mostchansky and M. Kolometz write that t-35's main turret was identical to t-28's one.
5. The stars are visible both on early and late production tanks and this suggest that they were not added occasionally but through the whole production run.
6. If I build t-35 or t-28 model (which is my modelling obsession :-)) with cylindrical turrets I will definitely add this star feature.
Greetings and happy modelling,
Krzysztof |
