Whoever told you the uniforms are 1943 and later was correct. The Red Army made changes to their uniforms right after Stalingrad. Putting post-Stalingrad uniforms in too-early time periods is a pretty common error.

The KV was used right up to the end of the war but became increasingly rare after production ended in 1943. One unit that retained a lot of older models was the 260th Breakthrough Heavy Tank Regiment on the Leningrad front. I am sure they had some very early KVs still tooling around in the summer of 1944.
