Hi Frank

Meanwhile I found out a little more. Actually the 3rd Company was left back for training of the nucleus of the Abteilung, after it didn't go into action in Italy late in 1943. The 1st and 2nd Company were formed from crews of 13th Company of 1st SS Panzergrenadierdivision LSSAH and assigned to the 101st s SS Abt, but went back in Oktober to the Eastern front until February 1944, when they were reassigned to the 101st Abteilung.

Concerning the the Tigers, I was mistaken by the tanks 131 and 133 which can be identified unambiguously as mid production tanks (in Sqaudron Signal armour publication no. 27, "Tiger in Action", pages 34 and 38; the pictures can also be found in the German Bundesarchiv), but I found a picture of a destroyed late Tiger ascribed to the 101st, which I indentify as 112. So 1st company seems to be mixed with the 3rd platoon equipped with mid production Tigers.

Meanwhile, I'm able to answer Your new question concerning 3rd company's leading tanks as well.
I found a picture in the Ryton publications "Tiger And Sturmtiger In Detail" book on page 29 showing the 304, proving the tank was a mid production vehicle, as were the tanks 331 and 323.
From this, I'm assuming the 305 was a mid production tank as well.

The Tigers 007, 008, 009, 205, 211, 212, 214, 222, 231 and 232 I could prove to be late versions by the pictures, I found.

About the photo of the 009 I'm not certain whether it belongs actually to the 101st even though it's credited to this unit, because the turret numbers seem to be yellow with white outlines instead of plain white like on the headquarter tank 007.

I hope this is of some help to You.

Kindly Yours

Arun Bauer
