| Well as stated previously, Simplicity of design, repair, and maintenance. Other things to consider is how "comfortable" a tank is for a crew. The prime focus for this is how much room is available inside for the crew to do what they have to do. A Sherman has good interior space available to avoid crew fatigue due to cramped conditions. Also the fact that they were so very adaptable to almost everything. This includes engineer vehicles, heavy artillery, tank destroyer, etc.etc.etc. The design was felxible enough to eventually carry the huge French 105mm gun. In fact they are STILL being used today. I don't know if anyone saw it and noticed but the Discovery Channel has a new show called "Axe Men" out right now. One of the crews they are following around and filming is using a Sherman tank chassis as one of their primary pieces of equipment. Have you seen any Tigers still being used anywhere? For anything? The answer to that (I think) is no. The reason is simple. The Sherman was a robust simple to operate and maintain vehicle. Kind of like the Timex of the WWII tank world (it takes a likin and keeps on tickin). I may be mistaken but I read somewhere several years ago that the Sherman was the only tank that the Soviets actually requested we send more of in the Lend Lease we set up with them because of these facts. |
