I'm currently reading Belton Cooper's book "Death Traps" and, as someone with first hand experience, he goes out of his way to drive home the fact that it was a real tragedy that the U.S. (Patton in particular) chose to put resources into producing the Sherman over the Pershing when it had the chance. Of course he's speaking from the point of view of the men who had to suffer directly and extremely painfully from their inadequacies (such as their tendancy to burn easily) rather than from the larger picture of what was best to win the war. I love the Sherman for many reasons (sitting here where I am all comfy and safe) but I really have to admire the courage of the guys who had to climb into them.
