Patton did not object to the M26 Pershing. He and others in command in Europe questioned the fielding of the the T-23 tank because of it's gas engine/electric drive. The T-23 gave no increase in survivability nor lethality over the Sherman but may have complicated maintenance and logistics. The field Generals did not want to deal with that in the midst of fighting a campaign.

Belton's book is ok to a point. But although it is a "first hand" account it is the views of a ordnance 2LT being brought up some 40+ years later.

One thing Belton misses, and many other do, is that almost all tanks in WWII were overmatched by the weaponry fielded while those tanks were on the battlefield.
