Gazza, anytime after the German move into North Africa you could create a scenario where sand-colored jerry cans got misrouted to another theater, but this will have to be your conceit for the particular vehicle you are doing. Some units and vehicles that were intended for NA (5th PD?) did get sent to the southern part of the Eastern Front instead, and they were camouflaged in Africa colors.
Look closely at the link posted above: even an originally Schwarzgrau jerry can can display faded and scruffed dark gray, red primer, rust, and and tarnished and bare metal areas - enough color for a mini-model!
