I've follow the responses since Paul first posted his question. I am familiar with the history of the Sherman tank, the Tigers, Panthers, T-34's and all the other beasties inbetween.

The responses have ranged from numeric superiority to variants, to longevity of the chassis and so on. I think only one responder summed it up perfectly: it didn't matter what vehicle you road into battle it's how you used it. During the first Gulf war the Kuwaiti's used a Saladin to sneek up on a T-55 and knock it out. That took guts.

It's the men inside that tin can - on either side who decided who the winner or loser in any confontation would be. It's too easy to be "armchair" veterans and discuss the merits of one vehicle over the other. In years to come I can see this question being rephrased as: The M-113, I heard it was rubbish? What's the score?

We talk in terms of metal not merit, not spirit, and not honor. We build the models but we rarely include the figures that rode inside. Maybe building a buttoned up vehicle is actually a disservice in the long run. How easily we forget.
