Hi,

I've been following the thread since it started. After yelling, "Troll", I figure I'll bite.

Since I got more serious about modeling about 3 years ago, I've built 10 shermans/variants. Why? Because I can! And I have 16 more on my shelf, unbuilt. I like the Sherman as a base b/c I think it's a decent looking vehicle and because I can build so many variants all on one base. I think it's much more attractive than many German AFVs (stugs, jags, etc.). To me, it LOOKS like a tank. Describe a tank to me, and you'll almost invariably have described something that looks like a Sherman. There is, contrary to popular opinion, a wide variety of paint schemes possible. There are long barrels, short barrels, jumbo heavy armor types, expedient heavy armor types, larger and smaller turrets, ARVs, tank destroyers, etc.

My favorite tanks to build were the most popular for their respective countries: Sherman, T34, and Panzer IV. I also like the Pz III a lot. All of these came in many variants, and have many decent kits available in order to reconstruct them.

As for the Sherman's "prowess" on the battlefield, well, it was "good enough". It's not like we're all building thousands of Chi Ha's, or T-60 light tanks, or little Vickers tanks, or Pz Is. They soldiered on throughout the war (and beyond), and that's good enough for me.

Rob
