Wally,
What you see is a field modification kit added to the M34 mantlet. Prior to using a sighting telescope the gunner used the roof mounted periscope that had a mini telescope mounted inside the periscope. A more accurate sighting telescope was later mounted coaxially for the gunner on the right side of the main gun. To accomidate the telescope the right side of the gun mantlet was torch cut and a kit consisting of a side cast piece and rotor cover were welded in place. Many state side M4A3 Shermans have this modification mainly for training. I have yet to see these modifications in period theater pictures but it may have been possible.
