Mike, I wasnt refering to the shackles. As you can see in this pic of a Greek Cromwell the device you mention is a solid steel ring as I said. The steel rings are attached permantly to the recovery cables. In order to attach/remove the cables to the tank, the D shackles have to be removed using spanners (wrenches for you Americans).

The cables are used in a V shape. The point of the V being where the two cables are joined by one of the rings. The V shape is mathematically stronger than using two cable together in parallel. I have seen pictures of Centaurs, Cromwells and Comets with rings in various shapes; circular, oval or lobe shaped as in your picture and mine here.
