A tank crewman was a vital component of his vehicle's operation. He was extremely trained for his duties aboard the tank. The only time he would be on foot would be if his vehicle were KOd or stuck and they had to withdraw because they were in danger of being surrounded.

No offense to the landsers but a tanker, even a loader, was more essential than a rifleman. No sane TC would allow one-fifth of his crew to leave his station. Interviewing a German TC veteran, he absolutely stated that the worst thing EVER was to be forced to walk (i.e. his tank had to be abandoned). He never did in his 3+ years fighting the Russians.

Can we imagine a "last ditch" scene in Stalingrad, E Prussia or Berlin or the Kurland Pocket? Sure. But it would be down to the last man, last bullet kinda situation.
