There were exceptional circumstances when crewmen were deliberately employed as infantry. When there were insufficient tanks or assault guns, sometimes the excess crewmen were allocated into adhoc infantry to escort the armour; in response to the absence of escorting infantry (panzergrenadiers), usually due to heavy casualties. This tended to happen in some of the assault gun brigades because most units did not receive the organic escort infantry company whose job it was to fend off soviet infantry. Most all of the situations that I've read about happened late in the war when replacements of both personnel and vehicles became erradic.
