I'm not sure how many of the previous respondents ever served in the military but I can say, from my experience, you're a soldier first and engineer, tanker, artillery man, etc. second.

Understanding that certain Corps (that's what we call them in the Australian army) or 'branches of service' have specialised skills one must never forget that the tactical situation dictates what role you perform at a given time.

I think Brian's point is a valid one and certainly not a recent phenomenon. My money is on the fact that if the German's or any Army for that matter encountered a particular tactical situation the Commander on the ground would have used any and all of his resources at his disposal as he saw fit to accomplish his task even if it meant using Panzer crew as infantry.
