I think 0.5mm seems too large. From what I can tell, it's more like .3mm.

Something I'm gonna try (as per Steve Zaloga suggesion) is to use thick acrylic craft paint: Tulip Slick paint -- used for painting and adding texture to clothing. Available at craft stores. I'll let you know how it goes for me. Zaloga says with practice, it's the way to go as far as Sherman roadwheel rim rivets.
