Hi Brian,
The balloon type tyres on Kubelwagen ...they didn't feature a lot on other German vehicles in the DAK; never seen a pic of eg an Opel Blitz with them...were of that type for giving better traction in soft sand.
And thus to -hopefully- avoid the feared 'digging in' of the powered rear wheels, resulting in long lasting efforts to undig one that got stuck.
It still even in the 21st Century is a good offroaders practice to lower
tyre pressure when driving through stretches of soft sandy terrain.
The balloon tyres were a good combination of greater 'sole imprint' of the tyre thus preventing digging-in with the ability to have a low pressure tire that still has acceptable steering qualities.
I can't recall offhand in which book, but I DO have pics of DAK Kubelwagens with a balloon spare tyre allright!
