Yes, the early M7s did have the sheet metal fitting for additional fuel drums. These also differed in having side opening stowage boxes, as opposed to the later top opening boxes.
Best references are the mentioned MM article, and I found the Tankograd TM extract very useful too. Tankograd have a series which contains TM images, in a very readable and convenient manner. Most fittings which are useful for modellers are in there, so no photos of how to replace spark plugs etc. At about 10 euros, you can't beat them really.
