I wholehartedly agree with your final assumption.
Honestly: for as lang as I have lived, I NEVER heard the compound "Brumbär" anywhere outside of childrens Books.
"Stupa" however, beeing not only an exocentric compound, but also a blend initially seems more complicated at first glance, but these are EXTREMLY common in German - just think of things like Uffz, Stug or the simply mindboggeling RkReÜAÜG.
