The M12 was built in 1942 on a Lee chassis, with M3 suspension. Before being
shipped to England in the spring of 1944, they were upgraded with M4
mid-production VVSS suspension (horizontal return roller arms with spacers)
and various other bits and pieces.
I don't believe that any M12's were upgraded with the late-production VVSS
suspension in the US, but is it possible that some were repaired in the
field and received a bogie or two of the late-production suspension.
